I received a heater in the mail today. I'm not sure if the unit is operating correctly. The temp in the tank is 65 degrees. The heater when set at 78 turns on for about 15 seconds and then shuts off and powers back on after a short period of time. I stuck my hand in the tank and felt the heater when the light turns on and it gets super hot. Is this normal for the heater to get so hot that the temp sensor turns it off so quickly? That's a lot of cycling. I thought I read somewhere that the heater stays on until the temp of the water is heated, not the heater.

Make sure it's in a location that has good water flow.

It has good water flow -900gph passing right by it. So I guess its not normal for the unit to cycle that often.

Time to research some heaters.......

Alliance 300 watt duraquartz heater

Also sold at some 'wholesale stores' online

Double thank the vendor for the refund, and move on, as they are not the trouble of finding a good one in the batch.

I agree.
You will get alot of opinions on what heaters to use, however I have been well served with Ebo Jagers and Visitherms. I wont use anything else.

Well I ended up getting a new visitherm deluxe 200w for 15 bucks shipped, gotta love "make offer" on ebay.

I'm in the process of doing a water change tonight. I have to pull water from my outside faucet since it bypasses my water softener. The water is 47 degrees! I need hard water for my koi. The 200w is heating the water but it's taking forever:)

My question is, does anyone have plans for a DIY temperature controller? I know units can be bought, but I like building stuff at a fraction of the cost:)

Tonight I figured out how to gut the heater that kept shutting off. I was able to bend the metal plate that moves due to temps. So now that I have it locked on, I'm looking for a controller.
Thanks
