Hey so i was draining my 55 into the back yard with my 50' siphon, wasn't paying attention and let the water level drop below the submersible heater while it was plugged in. I was luckily in the same room and immediately noticed when it began to steam. (i'm glad that it was apparently one of the explode-proof heaters). As soon as I heard the steam I ran and dumped about 15gals into the tank re-covering the heater with water. immediately afterwards, there was a good amount of condensation on the inside of the heater, but it seems to be disappearing. The light is on and it's acting normally. I'm still waiting to see if it will actually heat up the water from the water change.

My question is: Is this heater broken, or is it possible that I will get some more use out of it?

i learned that if i forget to unplug the heater, dont dump water back in immediately, mine was a hagen heater and it exploded :/

BTW what brand was your heater?

That wasn't smart never mix hot with cold. You got lucky that is all. (If Its a glass heater) creates different pressures and causes chaos. Ei tornados are when high pressure mixes with low pressure. The considensation the inside may go away. Next time let it cool down on its own.

I need to spark up my fish life

Ive had it happen and kill a heater and had it happen and the heater survived. As long as the heater is sealed, it should be safe to use as long as you monitor your tank temp. If it overheated it is possible it may have damaged the controller so be sure to monitor your temp for a couple days to be safe

The water was only 7 degrees different, so it didn't swing the tank temp too drastically.

i checked on it right before the lights went out and it was back to 79, I'll be watching the thermometer in that tank carefully

I would change it out, especially if its glass, and the fact that u dumped water on it assuming it was cold or room temp was a bad idea, surprised it didn't explode! Eheim jager heaters automatically shut off when water level drops! Thus you never need to unplug, petmountain.com has insane sales on them right now! http://www.petmountain.com/product/aquarium-heaters/11442-503776/eheim-jager-aquarium-heaters.html
