I recently set up a discus tank, but am having trouble getting it to the right temperature.

I bought a new Fluval 300w Fluval M Series for a 75 gallon tank. I set the dial to not quite 86 degrees, but the tank won't get above 81.5 and stays in the range of 81.2-81.5.

I've verified the temperature with a digital aquarium thermometer and also with two stick on thermometers on opposites sides of the tank.

The heater does not turn on very often, and when it does, it's often only for a few seconds. It is right next to the filter intake for circulation.

I added a second 300W Fluval M series, and there is zero change in temperature. It hardly turns on. It too, is right next to a second filter intake for circulation.

Why are they not staying on until they reach their set temperature? They are both brand new heaters.

Wow thats amazing. Thats why I always buy the cheap heaters from Ebay. Yes, the ones from China, but sometimes people here in America sells them too. Just got a 200w for my 10gal and its 85+ in there, I only have a 2" Pleco and 2" Syn cat in there waiting for my Festae package.

Same problem check my post. I have 4 that only get to 81F. I replaced them all with lower wattage ebo's and can get to 90F no problem no matter the room temp. When I send these fluval m's back to hagen I'm including a note not to send me back new defective heaters. I want a heater that is tested and works. The reason these heaters fail is the lack of calibration.

Try turning it just past the 86 mark...

I have a 200W Fluval M on a 46 bowfront and the temp stays at 86 even with 70 degree house temp, so it might be defective?

Did you place the heaters not fully submerged but in between the wave lines on them?

that might have been the problem....i had them fully submersed. I raised them both up, and the temp seems to be climbing......I guess maybe i didnt need the second heater after all.....

thanks so much for the help!
