Been having an issue with my heater being unable to get my tank to the temperature I require I believe because my basement gets cold. It is set to 82 for my FH and has only been to 78 and runs constantly. It is a 150w Aqueon heater for a 55g tank. I need to know if it is advised to run a second 150w, a bigger second heater or a single large watt heater. Any info/advice is appreciated.

Try setting the temp 4 degrees higher.

Turning the heater up as mentioned above should do the trick. If not, then I would definitely suggest a second heater. It's good to have a back up heater just incase one fails anyways.

I have it set to 82, I will set it to 86 and see what happens, I thought it was a heater issue because it is literally always on. I will get a second one to, thanks for the info guys. Soon as I can get some gasoline and out to the pet store we'll be in business. Maybe I'll ride my bike for the health of my fish.

In my experience the temperature markings on heaters have nothing to do with reality. They seem more to be an offset reference (bump it up 2 degrees) then an absolute reference (the 82 mark pretty much never equals 82 degree tank water).

If your basement is cold try covering the top of your tank. This will do a lot to keep it from loosing heat. If the heater is running constantly then you need more wattage (or a cover to keep the heat from escaping).

My guess is a second heater will help. Basements are very cool and you typically need to overdo the heaters to keep them up to temp. Or...just heat the room.

The room is heated but it's still chilly because it's cinderblock walls. The tank has glass tops with lights over them it stays constant 78 but I will bump the temperature up and add a second heater.

Must be a cold room, turning it up might help but if it is running constantly now it probably won't help. What is the temp in the basement?

If the room is 68* (probably colder but the math is easier) The current heater is raising the temp 10* above room temp, so another 150w heater would be able to raise it another 10*

I'm guessing you could probably get a second smaller heater if you wanted but the larger it is the faster it will work, which can be helpful when doing water changes with cold water.

I added another 200w heater last night. All is well in flowerhorn town tank temp rose easily and is maintaining without running all the time.
