How do you what size heater you go with. I've read/heater people use one heater more tank others use two smaller size per tank.

I'm looking to get heaters for 110g, (2) 55g, 40g, 20g. I'm leaning towards aehiem Jager brand.

Thanks for any input.

I think part of it depends on the ambient temperature of the room where your tanks are located. Another part to factor in is the heat created from pumps and filters. I have a 300 gallon tank that stays at a constant 79 degrees using a single 300 watt heater and two submersible pumps in the sump. This tank is located in a finished basement.

Based on heaters I've used. To raise tank temperature 10-12degF above room temp without needing to be on 100% of the time, an approx wattage needed is ~4 watts/gallon.

Thank you for the responses. I don't see the other equipment in the tanks producing much heat so I'm relying on just the heaters for the heat. So for my 110g I could get (2) 200 watt heaters and 55g get (2) 100 watt heaters. For the 40g get (1) 100 watt (1) 50 watt? Not sure on the 20g.

From what I've heard it is 3 watts per gallon. I also believe the reasoning behind having 2 smaller heaters as opposed to 1 large one is if it gets stuck on. If you have 2 smaller heaters and one is stuck on vs. a large one, you have more time to catch it and are less likely to fry your fish.

I agree with the above, the most dangerous heater mishap for your fish, is when it gets stuck in the on position. I have had this happen many times, with all brands of heaters.
It is very easy to cook fish within 24 hours if this happens.
I often use 2 or 3 undersized heaters per tank, that way if one gets stuck "on" the others will turn off For a 100-150 gal tank, I might use 2 or 3 x 100 watt heaters, depending on the temp of the room. This also works if ones goes off completely, the other one or two can take up the slack
