I dont know if this is where I would post this, but my heater one day out of no where got up to 86 and its normally around 78. I had unpluged it and turned the knob down some and it was fine for a few months, then just tonight it did it again! what is wrong with it?

Sounds like the heater has been fried. Occasionally heaters will get too hot, or be hot too long, and will bridge the wires. This will cause the thermostat to stop working properly. No way to repair these, that is effective. Time to buy a new one unfortunately.

There are plenty of reviews of both here on MFK. Search function. Jagers are my preference, but I like the Ebos over the eheims. The newer eheims are not nearly as good IMO. Stealths are great heaters as well, but cannot heat nearly as much water.
