Ok so im a noob at heaters, bought one for my 20 gallon and set the temp for 76 degrees.
Look at it this morning and its 83 degrees!
What do I do to fix it, i dont want it to get any hotter!
Oh it is a
100 watt rena cal basic aquarium heater

Was the heater situated in turbulent area or concentrated in one area?

I found out that cheap heaters like the one i have (elite) dont keep the temp at what is says on the dail i have mine set to 76 and on my thermostat it says 80 degrees. 100watt is alittle excessive for a 20gal to me but hey what do i know i am only in this for a yr. I use a 50watt for a 30gal. Get a jagur or what ever it is called my friend has one and it is always on point

I don't think there is anything you can do on this heater other than exchange for a different brand. There is no perfect heater even with the top notch brands. Most heaters are off by 2-4 F degrees. I see your is off by 7 degrees so that's a bit excessive. Another thing is your thermometer could be off if you're using the Coralife Digital Therm. You could put a piece of tape on the wire to remind you that it's off by 7F degrees.

That's a lot of heater for that tank. I agree with the previous poster. What kind of thermometer are you using ?

im using one of the stick on ones
The light on the heater is off now and its 78 degrees...
could it just be adjusting, because it is just the first day I put it in?

Never rely on what the dial says. Always use a thermometer and adjust to that. There are other things that affect the water temp (submersible pumps, ambient temp, lighting systems, direct sunlight, etc, etc).
