what kind of heater do all the other big tank guys use i cant find anything in old posts right now im running four 300w heaters in my sump and made a no pass by drilling four holes in glass as wide as my sump, and put the heaters in each hole forcing the water to pass it. there has to be a better way

I use Marineland and Eheim heaters. Recently i purchased some Aquaen and was pleasantly surprised.

I'm starting up a 1000 gallon myself and was wondering the same thing. See some spa or jacuzzi heaters on sale around the net and wondering if anybody has had a good experience with them. If not I'm just going to purchase some 300 W jagers because from my experience they are the most efficient heaters for their wattage.

in was thinking jacuzzi/pool heaters my self but that would be inline and i dont see that sustaining any heat pushing that much gph

I have the same question, so instead of creating another thread, I will bump this one. I don't know anything about them, but I have heard that heat exchangers are often used on huge tanks. I believe you have to plumb these devices to a hot water line and it uses the hot water from you water heater to warm your tank water. This youtube video shows the opposite of what we are trying to do, but it gives you an idea of how it would work if hot water were being used. I'm curious how JohnPTC and others with huge setups maintain their temps.

eheim jager

They are nice heaters...I've always used them, but using ten 300 Watt Ebo Jagers doesn't seem very practical. From what I've read it takes 1,000 watts to heat 1,000 gallons of water by 10 degrees. Including my sump, I'm at around 850 gallons and I am looking to be able to add 30 degrees of heat for those really cold winter nights. I found some inline heaters that look like they would be up to the task (Elecro in line heaters): http://www.aquaponics.com/store/index.php?route=product/category&path=40_72 or http://www.koienterprise.com/Pond-Heaters/Elecro-Heaters-p-523.html. I think I'm going to go with one of these, or maybe two 1,500 Watt Titanium heaters from Jehmco. I prefer throwing the titanium rod in my sump as opposed to having to plumb the Elecro's.

if your setup is in the house most likely you will have all the windows closed during winter so id go with 2x 1500w heaters.

if in the garage or a part of the house that gets really cold or drops below 60. F i would go with koi enterprise's in-line heater.
