one thing i have overlooked so far is the heater. i usually use stealths, but i know you arent supposed to use exposed heaters in with rays. im using a fluval FX5 so i cant stick it in the sump and i probably cant even use an inline heater. im assuming that even having them on the back up high and horizontal wouldnt be good consdiering how active these guys usually are, so what do i do?

and i still need to know if estes' marine sand would be good.

thanks in advance.

I have seen in another post here where a guy had put his heaters in pvc tubes with some holes drilled in them for water flow and layed them on the bottom of the tank. A great DIY heater guard.

i have thought about something like that, possibly incorporating a powerhead to increase flow over the heater, but im still looking for other ideas. thanks though.

this is what i did...check out my thread 3 new rays or 3 new rectics or somethin it has some pics in it

so the best option is to get a heater that i can buy a plastic guard for. thats not too bad. i noticed one the other day when i was looking through the distributor books at work, i think it was fluval.

As for your sand question.....Estes is fine. I use it in my ray tanks. It has no silica. Estes makes multiple types of sand, some for freshwater, some for salt. Make sure you get the sand for freshwater as the salt sand will cause the pH to go up to about 8.2.
