heaters and bio-media

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't let the zip tie sit directly on the heater but you can put the heater in drilled pvc pipe and zip tie that in place.
I have this set up and it works great. Click on the pic to zoom in on the heaters.:)

i agre^^ and i waould just use like cut up straws as bio. they are just mini ceramic rings.
ceramic rings are usually very porous and contain about a ton more surface area than straws( 100's of times more surface area). If that surface area is not neccesary however and you can achieve 0 ammo and 0 nitrite with straws then go for the straws.

Better still over the straws would be the ultra cheap scrubbies from zenzzo if you cant afford the bio rings.

These dont contain any soap, theyre just foam with a scrubber kind of top layer,

im in England and cant seem to find any scrubbies over here so was wondering what else i could use for bio-media, would the straws be ok for just bio?

Thanks
Matt

oh btw nice tank Greenterra, really like it, whats it stocked with? and good idea for the heaters, i might have to do that :)

thanks
Matt

Sorry just to confuse things futher i was just wondering what is the best bio media, im getting confused with all this surface area stuff, the higher the surface the area the better? if so then scrubbies are best according to the sticky, but it says bio-balls are equally as good as scrubbies although they have a lower surface area?

With thanks
Matt

I used straws on my first wet dry, there are pics on here somewhere. and let me say OMG PITA to cut them up to get enough. Then they float so if not enclosed properly they get all over the place, and cutting them can leave one end pinched closed. IMHO there are way easier DIY bio you can use.

no the foam is a sponge that retains water w/o filtering , the scrub part will work and found at hardware stores
