I've been working with reptiles for years and have seen countless "hot rock" burns, but I totally flaked. I have had this pair of tentacled snakes for like a month. The literature is thin at best, and almost no husbandry data is available. What little I could find was about a fatal fungus disease that they can get. I'd been super paranoid and just waiting for it to start. Then on saturday I found it.
I rushed them to the vet monday, expecting confirmation that it was a fungus, and hundres in medictions, biopsy, and cultures.
Luckily she said that it looked like trauma and did not fit the mold for cutaneous mycosis!
When I got home the male wedged next to the heater 1st thing. Then I realized it must be a burn.

The Solution:
The fix cost 1.59. I bought a 1 1/2" diameter PVC pipe and drilled 4 rows of holes lengthwise. I then cut it to size, put the heater inside, and covered the top w/ aluminum screen. I then placed the pvc shrouded heater directed under my filter's outflow.
This is working great, it also cuts down on the current, my snakes seem happier.

Hope this helps w/ eels, large fish, amphibians etc.

I have also had fish filter burned, I like pvc but instead of drilling I cut a series of parallel slots across the pipe on both side using a wide kerf blade, doesn't really make a difference, it was just that the saw was handy at the time.

Yeah, the slots might have allowed for move flow w/ similar protection, that's what I'll do next time.

Huh Huh Huh.......... Slots.

someone drulling over slots.. thats something ive never seen before....
