So I went away for 3 days for my birthday this week. Left the fish tank pretty much the way it was. Noticed the water felt colder than usual so I bumped up the heater a bit and left after that. Came home on my birthday to find both my Columbian tetras dead one stuck to each filter intake. No clue how long they were dead, but it must have been a while since the water turned cloudy. Anyway I went to fish them out with a net and I grazed the water. It was extremely hot. I checked the thermometer and it said 96!!!! I nearly crapped myself. I learned that Geo. Tapajos, Super Red Severums, Green Phantom Plecos and Vampire Plecos can withstand waters at 96 degrees, but apparently Columbian Tetras can not... Lesson learned- pay attention to the heater!

Hello; You are correct; pay attention. The thermostat control can be very sensitive on some heaters. By that I mean that only a slight movement of the adjustment knob can change the setting y several degrees.
I have taken several heaters apart and find that the better heaters have a very fine threaded adjustment screw as a part of the adjustment rod.
I tend to adjust my heaters over many hours or even days with only small movements of the adjust knob.

Yes, that's a hard lesson too learn sometimes. Always make small adjustments and check it often till it settles in on a temperature.

You could get a controller that would cut the power if your temperature got out of a parameter that you preset.

That's pretty cool, I didn't know that existed. Def something to consider.

Yeah I think there's a couple threads on them.
I have never used one so I can really recommend any but there's a bunch of different ones on the market.
I may look into one myself.
