So I just finished setting up my 750g tank and I have multiple heaters that add up to 1300watts. I insulated my garage so that the temp wont fluctuate. I placed my heaters in my 180g sump and put carpet under the sump. But I am noticing that my heaters are on all day! How many watts should I have total so that the heaters are not on all the time? I was thinking that 2000 watts (2 1000 watt heaters) should be good. Has anyone used these types of pond heaters? I am thinking about buying them. http://www.heatingyourpond.com/submersible-heaters.html Lastly, I am thinking that having heaters in your sump may be less effective since only a limited amount of water travels through at a time versus in the tank where it is surrounded by all the water. Would you agree?

Before we go any further, can I ask for a picture of your 750? I need inspiration.

This is topic near and dear to my heart. I have a 720 gallon and I was pondering the same thing.

I plan to put my heaters in the sump. From what I have read, since it is turning so much water, heating is more consistant in the sump.

What's the temp of your garage?

Titanium heaters come in much higher wattages.

Lol - your sump is as big as my tank but i have a 400w at each side of mine - so maybe spreading them out could help - and making sure they are all sett to the exact same temp so there's not more pressure put on 1 - PICS PLEASE!!

Pics first! answers later :)

Whats the Garage used for? Meaning do you park your car(s) in it or is it just a garage turned fish room? If its used for just fish you might consider heating the garage which will keep evaporation and condensation in the garage down a lot. BTW with the link you posted to those heaters seems a little odd that they dont have an actual picture of their product. Go to Aquatic Eco-Systems Inc and check out their stainless and titanium heaters and controllers. They are less costly and I'd trust buying from them over the ones you linked to. Most people drop their heaters in their sumps to hide them and to keep fish from getting burned on them. I don't think its any less efficient to keep them in the sump over keeping them in the tank.

I have 3 400 watt theos in my big tank. it's about 650 gallons with the water in the sump and it heats it fine.

Thanks for all the replies. My camera is broken at the moment but I will try and get a hold of one so you can see pics of the tank and filtration. I've got to stock up the tank as I only have a few fish right now. I don't know the temp of the garage but since I insulated it, it doesn't fluctuate too much. Right now the garage has the tank and one car so heating the garage probably is not the best idea. I added a few more heaters so now I have 2100 watts and I noticed its better. I only see two or three heaters turn on and off. I am going to board up the stand eventually since it is open.
