how many heaters will i be looking at for a 500gallon tank the size will be will be about 8x4x2.5 the tank will be in its own insulated room any ideas thanks

A safe rule of thumb would be 400w per 100 gallons. This higher wattage allows for easier transitions between heating and non-heating cycles. When you have a bank of heaters you gain in thermal mass and have fewer heat-no heat cycles. Your water will remain at a more constant temp. Your fish will thank you

i dont think you'll need any more than 1000w, i have a 500w on a 240g and that keeps up the temperature easily

I would go 3 heaters - one each end and one in the middle to maintain a more even temp across the tank (I'll leave it up to better heads than mine for the wattage!) If you have a high water circulation or are putting the heaters in the sump this won't be as important

Bigger tanks are more efficient to heat, less surface area to volume. So it's not a direct gallons to watts thing. Plus you have to consider how cold the surroundings get. If the room stays at 20C it's a lot different to a room that drops to 10c

If the room is kept relatively warm than a couple of good 300w (jagers or similar) should hold the temp up OK.

Try that, the temp wont suddenly crash, if you notice if cant keep temp and it drops a few degrees on cold nights then you can get an extra heater.

Exactly. I have two 250 watt titanium heaters keeping my 300 gallon tank at 80 degrees with no problems. And I've got almost 200 gallons in the sump. So I'm actually heating almost 500 gallons with 500 watts.
