heaters in corner overflow?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can...but the heater probably won't distribute the heat properly and it'll work harder to heat up the tank. Since you have overflows...I assume you are using a W/D (sump)..so why not place the heater into the sump area..this way the pump will draw the heated water directly into the tank. This will give a more even distribution into your tank, instead of having the water heated in the overflow and dropping into your sump mixing with air and then back into your tank.

Good luck. :D

I had the same thing going in my 72 bow front. The sump was too small to hold the heater. Mine worked fine in the overflow. Just as you know,, watch the water level. Keep in mind that the thermostat portion of the heater must be submerged too, not just the element. You may have to get a new intake pipe if it's perforated too low. Quick cheap fix.

can i place my heaters in my corner overflow box as long as they stay submerged? will they still heat the tank properly? i dont see why they wouldnt.

Our sump is too small to hold our 300 Watt heater. Since we are only using one overflow box, the heater is placed in the second overflow box which is capped off. The spraybar from the wet/dry return hangs off this overflow box, so the overflow box is always full with the heated water flowing over the top of the overflow box back into the tank.

I would think it would be hard to to keep a thermometer submerged in an overflow box which was continuously draining out to a sump. The overflow box that is plumbed to our sump doesn't have any standing water in it.
