heaters

Assuming your room's air temperature is approx 10~12*F cooler than the desired tank temp... I use 2~3 W per gallon...

I find that most people use way more heater than necessary and I often wonder if this has something to do with the large amount of heater failures I read about...

I have 2-80 gallon plexi tanks they are both heated by 125 watt Ebo Jager heaters, if your tank is glass a 150 would be better. I think they are the most accurate and longest lasting heaters available. Visi-therms and stealth heaters are JUNK. It was easy to create conditions where I would have 8 degree temp swings with the Visi therm/stealth heaters. The same size Ebo heater didn't fluctate 2 degrees. I have tested almost every brand of heater amd Ebo's are easly the best....no chineese junk titanium heaters I seen so many of them fry fish and even start fires I cant count the times. I currently have 15 tanks totaling 2030 gallons. They are all heated by ebo Jajer heaters, the one exception is the 240 its heated by a Ehiem and they own Ebo Jajer. In the last 10 years I havent had an Ebo heater fail.

You are correct a heater that is too large works too hard to heat a tank! I know that seams backwards. There is really only one part that "works" in a heater and that is the thermostat. If your heater is on the large size the thermostat turns off an on much more than if you had a smaller heater. This wears out the thermostat and fries your fish. I try to put in the smallest heater that will do the job.

250w is what is recommended for 75gallons according to the heater manufacturere of stealth heaters. I have a 250 in my 55 because its on an exterior wall near a window and its been fine.

I recommend against accepting manufacturer's recommendations... simply put, they have ulterior motives...

If they talk you into using too big of a heater, then they get more $ at the point of purchase AND the heater wears out faster needing replacement... it is a double win for the manufacturer to lie to you...

Filters are the say way... they tell you this $100 filter will keep your tnak clean... but then you realize it doesn't... so you buy another $100 filter... only to realize you now need a $25 powerhead and your finally happy... If they told you it would cost $225 to filter the tank in the begining you would have probably chosen a different approach...
