I have a 90Gallon aquarium and I'm just trying to figure out how I'm going to keep it heated.

Someone told me one 300Watt heater is enough.

Is there some sort of calculation or rule of thumb for this sort of thing?

gallons x 4 came up last week but it depends on a few things including

- how far above ambient temp are you needing to heat
- do you have a glass top on the aquarium

I'm in TX so I tend to think gallons x 2 is sufficient on my closed systems
If you have a lid then I'd think 300w would be moar than enough

I'd get a 200w and if it was always on then get a second 200w

1 gal x 4 = 4watts so
90gal x 4 = 370watts

that seems like a MAX figure to me so
I recommend (1) 200w and if insufficient
add (1) 200w for 400w total or roughly 4w/gal

I have x2 90G tanks in the garage currently. One has a 300W glass and a 150W to maintain a stable 78* with lids and a shipping blanket(so the heaters don't HAVE to work so hard), but was stable at 75* when only the 300W was working. The other has a 300W and a 200W stealth type on a Magnum filter(inline-sorta) and it also maintains 80* with lids.

For comparisons, the 55g that is unheated has been as low as 56*. I figure ambient is ~55* in the winter in the unheated garage.

My house is pretty cold... or feels like it most of the time in the winter.

My feeling is that I should get two heaters and keep them opposite sides of the tank. Unless I keep a ton of circulation flow I feel with one heater the water would be cooler on one side.. (does that happen?)

Maybe I can snag an Aqueon or a Jag on craigslist for 20 bucks.

My basement is like racersk's garage. 55 if I don't heat the water. So I wrap the tanks in styrofoam and normal heating is enough. I usually go about 2.5 watts per gallon. So a 200 watt heater handles my 75 gallon tanks just fine. But that's with the insulation.

don't skimp. go with a Jager, not aqueon.

with normal circulation one heater should be fine.

my old 90g was in my basement too and a 250w ebo jager was fine for normal temps.
