hi all

i have just sourced the following tanks and will be picking them up soon :headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

3x3x3
6x3x3
6x8x1.5 (frag tank)
13x3x3 - sump
10x8x4x4 L shaped tank

previous to this my biggest fish tank is 109gallons

now at a guess, if you have monster tanks you have monster heating and so on

so what do you use for heating?

my plans are as follows
3x3x3 - sump
6x3x3 - oscars
6x8x1.5 sting rays
13x3x3 large cat fish and things
the L tank will be malawi chichlids

my plan is to link all these up - use DIY filters

all this will be in my garage as a fishroom/chill out pad :nilly::nilly::nilly:

and as this is my first post a little about myself

my name is steve hughes

i am 18 - and a mod on a reef forum called reef park

i am a long time fish keeper (since i could walk) - breeding oscars in a 40gal when i was 13  (i have learned lol) then moved into marines and been with them since till a year ago when i got the freshwater bug again and got a 3x3x2 for the front room

these tanks came up beginning of the week and who am i to say no? :WHOA:

i am from the NW of enland in a lil place called southport

anyways - thanks in advance

steve

Go to www.jehmco.com. You are going to need one of the larger heater & controller setups. Probably will need a dedicated line for it. 3-5 watts per gallon.

are you going with electric heat ???

if so, i would use industrial heaters for chemical use and put together your own controller..........happy to help with details.

you will also want two separate units for reliability

I would think heating the room would be best. Insulate it well then just heat it, it will be cheaper this way. The room would get nearly that warm anyway with so many tanks in it. I would think you could use a few in tank heaters to fine tune the temp, but get it close to the room temp. That's going to be sweet when its all set up.

3-5 wpg is trash and a waste unless you have a very cold house. Google aquarium heater calculator to see how many watts you will need.

I can run my 75g tank off of 75 watts in the summer or 100 in the winter. I actually had a heater break (my fault) a week ago and a 50* watt heater kept it just under the temp I keep my tank at (79*).

its going in his garage

bigger heaters don't waste anything.........its just more expensive to have the back up heating if you need it. in a dual system the sum of the two heaters will always be overkill as it needs to get the job done on one.

It is called a general rule, which means that it is veritile for different setups. Its great that you only need to use a 75W heater. On the other hand, I had to use a 150w on my 30G tank just to keep it warm during the summer. There are a lot of factors that go into that number. Hence, the general suggestion.

For some crazy reason, I totally spaced the whole heat the room concept. This is probably your best bet in this situation. Keeping the room nice and toasty will allow the tanks to maintain a decent temp. You could utilize a heater controller setup just as a safety precaution.
