Medway Me.
I need heaters for a 180. How many watts do I need, I found an awesome deal on e-bay, two 300 watts for $24! Will that be ok or would one huge one be better? Also will it be ok to put them in my sump instead of in the tank?

Depends on ambient room temp. & tank temp. goal (lower room temp more heaters).

Here's a calculator to get you in the ball park.

Go with multiple heaters for redundancy (if one goes out etc).

I prefer more than 1 heater rather than 1 large 1. Just in case one goes bad. Not sure about the difference btw heaters in tank vs sump.

As mentioned redundancy = additional safety which is always best. Also, I'm sure you have, but have you been able to chk review's on these good heater's, cause the scariest pc of equip. in a tank for me is the heater. When I use to use them I had 4 in a 5 yr per. become defective & raise the temp. between 5 deg. & almost 12 deg. 5 deg. not to bad, but 12 deg. lead to loss of fish life:cry: . This would happen w/ in less than an 8 hr. per. If I where still using them cost would be the last thing I considered. I know any brand can become defective, but there are a few sold on eBay & otherwise that own many horror stories & a few others avail. that you almost can't find a bad thing to be said about them i.e. Stealth, Visi-Therm, Tronic, Jager etc. Just a thought :) :) :)

in my 210 I have a big 400 watt one and a little 120 watt one
:D

I have a 200W heater in a 60 gallon and bow does it keep the water warm. I will get a thermometer tomorrow because I just don't quite trust the thermostat within the heater... that and the fact that I bought it used...

For a large tank multiple heaters and don't get cheap on them.

I run 2 250watt stealths in my 215 and my water is always accurate @ 86F

cool thanks everyone. I'm gonna get two 300's. Their brand new so they should be fine. If not i'll ship them my dead fish! lol

I have an acrylic 240 and I run one 300watt heater with a large power head to help move the heat throught the tank. This tank is in my garage and in the winter it stays steady at 76 degrees F. I shut it off completely in the summer. winter usually gets about 20 - 25 degrees outside here.
