How many watts of heating do I need to keep a 125g (72" long) heated to 78F (room temperature is 70F)

Would two 150W heaters be sufficient?

i have 1 400w right in the middle of mine and it keeps my tank 81-83. i regret using the 1 big one and i should have gotten 2 200w... my tank is kept warm though so 2 150s should be fine.

it puzzles me about heating a tank I have been keeping aquariums for over 30 years and heating a tank has never been a problem all the rules of thumds seem to me not to matter. I always had my tanks indoors in my house not in a unheated garage. and I have had tanks from 5 gallons to 380 gallons I now have 6 tanks smallest being 120 largest 380 gal I heat my room. in the summer no heat I live in cleveland oh I have used heaters before in my 180 I have had 1 200 watt heater temp 78-80 that was the flux in temp. I used styreo on the aquarium stand bottom. I never did 2 heaters in one 1 tank when I used heaters it never cost a lot it never turned off and on a lot never any problems with heating any size tank.

I have a 150 with two 300w's, heats it quick and even when its in the 50s and 60s here (i have it outside but live in florida). I bought the two on ebay shipped for a TOTAL of $29. They are odyssea brand and have been working great. Look into them. you can get them in lower watts too!

u guys go freaking heavy on heaters i run a 200 on my 125 no problems

I have one 300W Hydor ETH on my 220G glass tank, in a 68F basement. No problems keeping the tank at 78F year round. BTW, I also have the glass lids in place & lots of rock work in the tank.

I was thinking the same thing. I use a 250w in a 125 positioned in the center and it heats it to 84 no where near max setting. I use the same 250w in my sump on my 180 w/ the same results.

I think it depends a lot on tank location.

for example, my 150g is in my finished basement which has a large glass door walk out to my back yard. in the winter months, this glass radiates cold air. in the summer it is warm.

so, in winter, sometimes I come downstairs and both my heaters are on.

in summer, both are never on at the same time (even though I calibrated each heater seperately, one seems to be a little more sensitive than the other and tends to come on first for some reason).

granted, I could probably run the tank off of one 250w heater, but in winter it would be on most of the time and if it ever failed and I was on holiday, I could come down stairs to a cold tank of dead fish..so I use two..:)
