This last weekend I got a acrylic 500 gallon tank, and I have been trying to figure out what will be the best way to heat this pig. The house I live in is a rental so I can't do to much to the house itself so a household hot water heat is out. And I'm not too excited about the idea of have 4 or 5 500 watt heaters running. The only thing I have really been able to find is Jehmco has several different controllers and heaters but I'm not sure how good of quality they are. So what does eveyone that has a tank this big or bigger use to heat the sucker? Thanks for the help.

First...

Now..

What kind of filter are you using?

Watts is Watts...it's just the efficiency of the system to retain the heat.

Have you seen this calculator? http://www.fishyou.com/aquarium-calculator.php Just change the price per Kwh.

Here's one to do the math for heating... http://boonedocks.net/fishtank/ftweb.php

Possibly piping in a small electric water heater (apartment or R/V size) from another room or hidden under the stand.

Two 1000 watt heaters on a controller should work fine if the tank is indoors in a heated space. The titanium heaters and Ranco controllers that Jehmco sells are very good quality. I have 2 500 watt heaters on a controller from them that has been running for about 2 years without being shut off with no problems. aquaticeco.com is also a good source.

Thanks for the welcome. the filtration system will be a sump holding about 75 gallons with 2 mag 12 return pumps. I'll look into the the small electric water heater, and thanks for the link. But I'm worried that one 1000 watt heat won't be enough. My house is old and drafty and I'm not home much so I keep the house temp at 62 for most of the winter. It cost too much $$ to keep it at 70 during the winter and I'm not there so I don't see the need to keep it that warm.
