Hi guys,

Do you think the lack of a heater will have bad consequences on a planted tank? Heres the plants: Crypts, wisteria, java fern, java moss, rotala indica, and dwarf hair grass. Reason I ask is, I put a newt in my planted tank. The newt prefers cooler water. It likes water in the range of 65-68. It can tolerate a little higher like low 70s, although I don't know if its bad for it in the long run. I currently have the heater turned off.

I have no idea what the temp is right now in the tank. Im on socal and its pretty warm out. Room temps are probably in the 70s.

I think you'll have to choose what's more important; the newt, or your plants :)

You guys are right. I looked up the temp requirements for each plant and most required atleast low 70s on the low end. I think only 1 plant, the Java Fern, can tolerate some mid-high 60s. So I won't even try it. I'm going to move the Newt to its own 10 gal.

Many plants do just fine at cool temps. Crypts are definitely warm-water lovers, but things like Java moss and Java fern, hairgrass, swords, banana plant, elodea, egeria, bacopa, ludwigia, cabomba, hornwort, valisneria, sagittaria, etc. live in temperate as well as tropical conditions and don't mind cool temps. They won't grow as quickly but they'll be perfectly healthy.

Your going to want to heat your water...most of your plants are tropical in origin.

+1. If you plants dont get enough heat they will turn brown fast.
