I am currently cycling my tank and am looking for a heater. I know not to put an open heater in the aquarium, but I do not have a sump, so I will need a heater guard. I don't have a drill, and don't know how to make one from PVC pipe. So, I want to buy one. I was thinking the Hagen tronic heater because they make a guard for it, but I can't find any sites that have the guard in stock. My LFS says they don't carry them. Does anyone know where I can get ahold of one? Also, what watt should I get for a 180?

I run stealth heaters in my tank with rays never had a problem...

Do you have a canister filter? If yes, then get the 300W Hydor in-line.

Just splice it into the return line to the tank and there you go!

yes, I have a fx5 and an xp3. I will look into that heater, thanks! Nic, do the stealth heaters have a guard or are they less likely to cause a burn in some way?

I had very bad experience with Aqua Medic heater 1000watt and the Temp controler too the controler worked for 5 months, then short. I bought the heaters 4 of them(brand new) and they all doing the same thing... leaked (short the house curcuit). One worked for 6 months.I was home, and the other 2 last for 4 months and I was home when it happened. The last one was hurting me the most it worked for 3 days then short and killed my p14 galx; which I got her from Mike.I was at work when it happened . So be carefull when buy the heater and if you can...don't put them on the same curcuit with the filter.Just base on my experience, at least one blown anther one still work.

stealths are plastic I run 2 250 watts heaters on the back of my tank never had a problem I would take them over the hydor inlines but that is my preference....

Nic, so since they are plastic they can't burn the ray as bad as a glass one?? Also, I was thinking that instead of vertical down the back of the tank putting them horizontal right at the surface would be better because the ray won't be able to lay up against it. Do you think this would make a difference?

For my ray tank the heaters are in the sump. However, I have used stealth heaters in my other tanks with no problems even when the fish rest up against it.

mine are vertical in the middle of the tank I don't think it would make a difference.... the stealths don't get as hot underwater while running I can touch my stealth I don't recommend that with a glass or metal heater....
