Swimming in a mountain river
Hello. So I'm preparing for my first monster tank with a sump(other was a 240gal with 2 FX5). Tank is 300something. I'm going to have tropical fish in it, so I'll need to heat it. This may be a dumb question, but am I supposed to heat the water in the sump? Or in tank? I'm assuming both would work, but which is more effective for such a large tank? My 240 didn't need heating. I hate being a noob! :P

putting the heater where there is the most water flow makes them the most efficient. So if your gonna have massive power heads in your main display then put them their. If your sumps going to be moving the most water then put the heater in their.

Just as an added point, the heater is sometimes attacked by certain species of fish and is also not attractive to some owners, so in those cases it may be better placed in the sump.

Even with powerheads in the display tank, I'd say to put it in the sump. If you have sufficient heaters, and a running sump, it should be fine heating the tank. Also reduces clutter and an advantage of for having a sump, IMO.

Alright thanks. In the sump it is. Looking to have minimum equipment in tank. But don't want to screw anything up :)

I posted a similar thread today also, and the response was 2 x 300 watt heaters for a 300 gal, and one fellow said that's what he uses in his 540. So i guess that's the goodness :D

600wat is redy to go. If you have in future extra big tank is more economical to heat whole room.
