Some where
Hey i have 6 juvinile RBP's in a 55g and the tank is up against an exterior wall (i really dont have much of a choice) I had bought a 300w heater to make up for the cold however the past few nights it got cold and my tank has been freezing for the past few nights its 64 degrees the p's arent eating =( i went and got my 100 or 150w heater (not sure which) and put that baby on full blast with not much luck waters still cold. like 66 so then wasting no time the next morning after seeing barley any results i ran out and bought another 300w heater so now i hav 600w going in my tank and the new heater isnt staying on very well WTF is going on it keeps shutting off my fish are going to starve to death if they dont freeze and suggestions till i can move the tank. Blankets insulator etc is there any thing i can do to insulate the heat better i cant loose these guys it took me months to finaly get a compatible shoal they get along and are growing at pretty similar rates

wrap some blanket or other insulating material around the tank. does the tank have a lid? if not then you should get one.
even it is against an exterior wall it shouldn't be that bad, I mean it's in the house right? turn up the heat in your house. if the wall is that poorly insoulated you should move out of there all together.:)
my 75g is by an exterior wall and next to a window it is fine.

Howdy,

As said above, your tank should be in a room, so I do not quite understand how your temp drops to 64 unless you like it cold at home?!

You do not need to set heaters to full blast. They will operate at full blast when the temp drops below the set temp. They only know on/off.

600 W on a 55 is a lot. I have less than that on my 220. Something goes wrong and your fish will be fried, not frozen. Be careful!

Get a piece of heavy-duty home-insulation styrofoam and place it behind the tank.

Best of luck,
HarleyK

Wow, it's hard to imagine that 600W worth of heaters can't maintain temperature in a 55g, unless you live in an igloo and your exterior wall is made of ice. Have you double checked with a different thermometer?

Ive used the blue insulating foam. i dont think your temp should drop that much though. Its about 68 in my house, and the 55g is at 74, with just a 100 watt and a 250 watt. they only run once in a blue moon.

i bought one of the big squares of isulating foam at homedepot and cut it down to size to fit under the tank, and behind it between it and the wall.

well the reality is my dads a cheap bastard and only turns up the heat in the room hes in but im back to 400 watts thanks to the brand new 300w i bought today blew up in my tank WTF is going on and yeah after my brand new heater exploded inside the tank (before you ask no i didnt take it out of the water hot or anything like that) i immediadly wrapped in in blankets and i left holes over the filter and anything that gives off heat so i dont have a fire tonight haha

its only 55 gallons.. throw yer fish in a bucket, drain the tank and move it an inch away from the wall and add a layer of insulation... refill the tank and be done with it...

Hum this is a bit crazy to me as well.

I live in a house that has no insulation, I don't turn the heat on at all, I only use space heaters in the rooms I am in. The house is normally like 45- 58, I have a 220 Acrylic, hooked to a 55 Gallon Glass Sump. I use two 300 watt heaters, the tank stays at about 76 even though the heaters are set to 78. I knocked the plug out of one of the heaters leaving me only 1 300 watt heater and the tank only dropped to 72.

I have no insulation around the tanks or the plumbing. I do have glass tops over the tank, and a ridged foam insulation over the top of the sump. I am sure the acrylic helps a bit but I should still suffer the same heat loss through the glass sump.

2 broken heaters 60 bucks down the drain and still have a cold tank wrapped inblankets FML i at least got the tank to 72 today and i got them to eat which is weight off my back but its 15 degrees out now so i know the temps going down tommorow im going to see if my LFS will take returns on the heaters i doubt there going to believe i didnt take the one that exploded out of the tank but i didnt FML wish me luck

What happened to the second heater?
