Question:

In a house heated to 70F. How many hours per day would a 50w heater have to run to keep 10g's of water heated to 78F?

I know this is a complex question but if anyone knows the answer or even has a close guess, it would be very much appreciated.

probably not much. once the tank is up to temperature, the heater just cycles on and off as needed. water tends to retain heat well (it has a high heat capacity), so the heater might only actually be in the on position for a few hours out of each day total. but during each hour it may cycle on and off a few times.

add it all up and you might get a few hours max. out of a 24 hour period.

in ontario, hydro is cheap.

if the heater was running full out for 24 hours, it would cost you:

24h x 0.05KW x $0.056 = $0.06

or 6 cents per day to heat the tank if the heater was on 24 hours each day.

given that its on only a few hours a day, it might be 1 cent per day or 30 cents per month..

I assume cost is why you are inquiring? its nothing.

Having a lot of tanks in a single room tends to make the humidity in that room go up...

Dehumidifiers are great for removing humidity from the air and they also warm up the air in the room a good bit...

I was able to heat a well insulated garage fishroom through the North Carolina winter with nothing but dehumidifiers as a heat source...
