Hey,

Just curious on how should I heat up my 3 foot by 2 foot by 2 foot wooden cage. The Top is semi wood with screen, and the front of the cage is open with sliding plexi glass. Everything else is wood.

Heat Rocks- I heard are bad for reptiles underbelly.
Heat Lamp- Don't know the approximate size I should get to heat a tank 2 feet high.

...thats it any suggestions?

I'm still debating between a snake like a corn, rosy boa, ball python, blue-tongue skink.....I will be getting my reptile at the next reptile show. My really isn't final call until I go their because they have lots of strange unique reptiles. So i may not end up choosing the reptile listed.

I use a 65w halogen heat lamp, which is about 10" above a rock placed as a basking spot, and it heats that spot to ~120F. It keeps the rest of the terrarium to ~80-85F, depending on ambient room temps. This is in a 4x2x2 all wood terrarium with 2 front glass doors.

If you don't need a basking spot, a better choice (though not cheaper) would be to get an RHP or heat tape to place on the ceiling, or you could use heat rope to wrap around driftwood/limbs/objects in the terrarium.

And I actually need to increase the size of the air vent (currently 1.5" circle), because it can get really warm and very humid in there.

Oh, yah, meant to include heat pad but forgot. Just make sure whatever animal you get can't rest on/against whatever heat source you use, unless its the heat rope (its designed to be rested on).

yeah for snakes i'd go with heat tape. Thats how I heat the wooden cage my carpet is in. heat tape covered by lenolium.
If you get a sun loving lizard (one that requires UVB) you may as well go with the lights. any that don't require UVB though can be heated the same way as snakes (unless they need a very high basking temp, then you'll want a combination.

yes. always use with a thermostat to be on the safe side... and it would probably be safe to make sure they are secured some how..... it is rare but snakes have in the past tried to eat their heat mats....
