Anyone know many watts per gal one needs in a cold climate of 50-60 F to heat a tank at higher temps of say 78 F?.

I dunno but I was told the general rule is 5-7 watts per gallon. So a 100gal tank will require 500watts.

55 gal. Was deciding whether or not to get a 250 watt heater. Would run it with a 75 watt heater.
Or get a 200 watt heater and run it with another 200 watt heater.
Currently running 200 watt heater and 75 heater together and the light on the newer 75 watt is on almost all the time just to bring the tank up to 70 F. I figured I only have once chance to overheat the tank and kill the fish so better be careful./

I would run 2 of the same watt heaters... me I would do 2 250 watt heaters just incase one fails....
