Hi everyone!!! Hope your doing well!! I received some rock's for my 55 from ADG & 2 of them are really big and heavy. How much weight can a 55 handle? Thank you.

I don`t have a definitive answer but know the type of glass matters, tempered or plate. Try searching the topic because I know this was discussed a while back and there are youtube videos on the subject. For me (I don't want to take too big a chance) I have some ten pounders in a hillstream set up but they rest on sand and gravel, not glass. It distributes the weight more with no pressure points on the glass.

My 120 gallon has had 300 plus lbs of rocks for quite a while with no issues. Sand distributes the weight. I do not recommend diggers for this set up as they could shift the pile. Fish love caves.....My issue is netting fish. Once in the tank most are never to be caught without removing the rocks which is truly a danger to the glass.

I had a piece of granite in my 125 that was the size of a basketball. You want the rocks to sit on the glass, especially if you have fish that will dig. Here's a discussion from another site that also has a link to a video.

Put lighting diffuser under your sand or gravel, cut to the size of the tank. Any tank that I have lots of rockwork in, I always put lighting diffuser under the substrate. It will act as a barrier and break the fall a bit if any heavy rocks were to become unstable and tumble onto the bottom.
