Hedge hogs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think it would cost tooo much. They are not very big. I think they eat cricket and other insects. Maybe fruit from time to time. Are you going to get one?

Pretty eazy and not to expensive they eat all sorts of stuff and are pretty fun pets just don't wake them up in the morning when there all curled up they can be very pissy in a cute way but they have some pretty sharp teeth

I would love one, but I have too many animals at Wurm Zoo

In order to properly care for a hedgehog, you need at the very minimum:

High quality cat food, like Innova - $20/bag
Heating pad (they will die if they get too cold) - $20
At least a 20 long terrarium - $30 or so, but BIGGER IS BETTER
A wheel with a solid running surface, big enough for the adult animal - $20
Bedding - $15/bag
A commitment of 3-5 years

Hedgehogs aren't a "get it and leave it" animal. If you don't socialize them frequently, you'll quickly regret getting one. As mentioned above, they have VERY sharp teeth and of course their quills to let you know when they're not happy. They're insectivores, so they need a lot of high quality protein in their diet. Even your store bought hedgehog food isn't really adequate for them. Furthermore, they run up to 2 miles a night in the wild so they need a wheel in their cage or they risk developing numerous health problems related to obesity.

I really wouldn't recommend getting one unless you're SURE you have the time, money, and space. This is one of the more frequent animals I see up for adoption due to people impulse buying and then 3 months later realizing they got more than they bargained for.

Yep, at least the African Pygmy ones that are usually kept as pets.

I've heard of some lasting up to 7 years, but those are definately the exceptions. Mine lived to 5 1/2, but at the end I had to euthanize her because she wasn't able to walk. She could move her legs, but only enough to flip herself over onto her side. It was really sad, but it was her time.

African Pygmys yeah, they are about three to five years. My sister had one as a pet growing up. They are cute little buggers and will eat just about anything. She had hers 'box' trained it would only go on a bit of kitty litter in the corner. It's main food was cat food, specifically Meow Mix. It got fruit and peanut butter from time to time too. THEY HAVE HUGE TONGUES!

She got hers out nearly every night and it loved running in wheels. It was extremely social. Loved having it's belly rubbed. Rarely did it jump and poke you with it's quills after the first few months. It was a very good pet. I think her's lived right at 4 years.

Hope that helps a bit!
