Went to a local fish shop today and spotted this few small babies bichir. the shop owner clain them to be babies lapradie. they have 12-13 finlets but the pattern dun look like a lap at all. I can't really confirm, so may need some help here.

yup those are baby lapradei. it seems they're being captive bred now, possibly in indonesia?

heres another one. i saw this pic over 2 yrs ago, probably before there was any captive bred. So chances are this is wild caught, and if thats the case, its probably larger than the baby ones above. So its patterns look a bit more like the adult.

all bichirs (and ropefish) are born with external gills. but no they do not last for life.

Thank for the ID. i asked the local fish shop owner and was told they are from indonesia and maybe this will be the only shipment they will bring in as the price is not cheap.
