Are these guys illegal to keep as pets? I read they are illegal in Indiana but wasn't sure about the rest of the states. Here are their scientific names for anyone interested.

Cryptobranchus alleganiensis alleganiensis, (Eastern hellbender) and C. a. bishopi (Ozark hellbender)

They are protected. The only individuals that could be kept privately are those that were pets before they became protected.

Thanks Chris! They're some ugly SOB's but would be neat to see one in person. I'm going fishing tomorrow for some Mud Dogs, if I catch any, I'll post em up.

The hellbenders have really been hurt by impoundment and siltation of our rivers; most of the remaining populations are small, isolated, and showing poor recruitment. You can still buy other big aquatic sallies, though.

Be aware: it is illegal to take ANY herp home to keep as a pet in Tennessee. You must buy from an authorized vendor and be able to show proof of purchase.
