Hellbinder (waterdog,mudpuppy)

Anyone kept one? A young neighbor caught some yesterday. I'm gonna go study these guys. I have'nt seen one in years.

also im pretty sure these are a protected species so your best bet would be to let them go as soon a possible

I'm trying to get ahold of dnr now. Like I said it's been years. He may only have a newt.

they need prestine water quality to be kept long term.

they sorta remind me of slimy uncooked meat, or lungfish..

An alternative would be tiger salamanders, or even axolotls.

They need really clean, rapid moving water. They like rocky bottoms too and get pretty big! I'd just release it, they take a ton of work to keep them alive.

I went and looked at it today. It's a Hellbender. Out of the several 4" salamaders in the tank only 2 had the gills. Seems when you find them you've found a clean stream.
