Hey there Monster Keepers...I just today got my first Arowana. I have him in a 55 Gallon tank, which I know is not going to be big enough for long. At what length does he need to be placed in a bigger tank? I am trying to get a 180 for him next, but I was just curious how big is too big for a 55 gallon? I do not want to keep him in there long enough to cause any harm to him.

Thanks, and I know that he definitely needs to upgrade. I am not planning on keeping him in there for long.

I am extremely excited to have my lil monster, and to be a part of this forum. As my name implies...I'm curious, so if you have a piece of advice for me...let me know. Thats why I am here.

2-5 months mayb then stunting will begin and kaboom unhealthy lil fella 180s not enough tho depending on the species

congradulations and best of luck

He is a 6" silver arowana...sorry I forgot to mention that in the original post.

I have a biowheel 350 and a powerful air pump going to the tank...along with a heater. Is there anything else I will need for the arowana's health as far as filtration and accessories are concerned? I plan to upgrade filters once I upgrade his tank.

And again...this is my first Arowana. I have read a good bit of material on the species, but I would still really appreciete any input or suggestions from you wise keepers of the monsters. I am about to start into an Aquatic Biology major and I have been keeping fish for 3 or 4 years now. I love 'em and hope to spend the remainder of my life studying and enjoying them. I know that there is alot out there that I just simply do not know yet though. So please...shoot me some advice.

-Thanks

Welcome to MFK, you'll get a much broader response posting questions in the Arowanas sub forum.

Average growth for a silver aro is 1-1.5" per month with sensible feedings. Silver aros are gluttons and if you don't apply a little common sense when feeding, it is not unheard to see 3" per month.

So any ways figure that within 3-4 months your aro will be 10-11" and in definite need of the larger tank. Your aro will continue to grow rapidly up to the 24-25" mark, it's growth will then slow to 1-2" per year. Many people keep their large silvers in 180g tanks, IMO once your aro is over the 24" mark it is too big for a standard 180g(6'x2'x2'). A good rule of thumb is, the tank length should be 3x the length of the arowana and tank width/depth should be equal to the length of the arowana. Figure your silver aro will eventually get to at least 30-32" long.

On other thing, arowana are extreme jumpers, your tank lid must be completely sealed. Even the small unlikely holes, many arowana have found their way through only to die.

Thanks for the info. I just got done getting my top sealed. He shouldn't be able to get out.

...hehe...I love your avitar Bderick
