I found this site in my search for tips on photographing my cichlids. I'm 32 y.o., live in western KY, and have been in the tropical fish hobby for years. Recently, after much frustration with my old point and shoot camera, I decided to invest in a Canon Eos Xti/400D. I've always had an interest in photography, but never enough to take the next step and dish out the $$$...until now. I really look forward to meeting many of you in the forums.

Welcome to APF!

There are plenty of members who shoot with a Canon and i am sure they can provide lots of advice on how to use your camera. Be sure to share some of your photos!

Welcome Shawn.

The XTI will do a good job for you. What do you have for a lense for it?

I have the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 that came with the camera kit as well as an EF 75-300 F/4.0-5.6 III and a EF 28-105 f/3.5 - 4.5 II USM Lens which came with the total package I purchased. I know this isn't high dollar glass I'm working with here, but I'll have to make it work for now until I can get enough money up for something nice.

Welcome! Hey, there's a band called the Firedogs in my town. They are firemen musicians!

I'm a fireman and a musician as well. We just don't have a band. I thought about taking up the pipes since we have no one in the department that plays them.

Welcome, Shawn!
Nice camera you had chose… even better than mine…:-)
Hope to see you make the photos better than mine soon too…

Of the lenses you list, I would probably give the 28-105 a try first. Its not a great lense but its not a bad lense either.
