Hello everyone! I am glad that I found another discussion board where I can discuss freshwater tanks! I currently have only saltwater tanks, to be exact, 2 10 gallon FOWLR tanks, 1 29 gal biocube reef and 1 90 gallon reef that I am filling up on tomorrow. The problem here is that the only remaining fish from the 2 10 gallons are going into the new 90 gallon setup along with the rock. This leaves me with 2 10 gallons, a whisper HOB filter, 2 lids (1 with a fluorescent 15w bulb and one with 2 incandescent bulbs), 2 substrates (very fine sand and somewhat large grain white sand that you buy in 5 lb. bags at most pet stores) and 100$ leftover from the 90 gallon build... I want to start up a freshwater planted tank. My questions are: Are there alot of plants that can survive under a 15w fluorescent lamp? Will I be fine growing plants in large grain sand substrate? What are some good plants? And what should my stocking list be? I was thinking a couple of neon tetras, some driftwood and plants, but I don't know if I should improve my lighting. Any help appreciated :)

The sister site aquariacentral.com would be a better source of information for planted tanks.

The spectrum of the 15w fluorescent is more important than the wattage. I like www.rexgrigg.com for planted tank information. He's pretty cut and dry, but has great info about how light works in planted tanks.

There are a lot of low light plants that you can grow with limited lighting. I would suggest you start out with low light plants then move on to those that need more light as your skill increases.

I'm the same user name on Aquaria Central, so look for me there as well.
