Hello all,

This is the Vigs from Houston, TX. This is my first post here! Long time listener, first time caller...hehe. Anyway I have several 55g and 75g reef and African set-ups, but never really had the opportunity to move up to the big time.

Incidentally, my place of business has a 150g (72 x 24 x 20) in-wall show tank in the lobby that just became vacant. It has housed a single giant (15") wild type oscar, a big source of attraction, for the last 16 years. That fish recently passed, and now customers (and management) are looking for a suitable replacement.

As the resident "fish guy" the task has fallen to me. I think the general consensus is for another big, interactive cichlid, preferably a large show-quality male as a "wet pet". So far, I'm considering N. haitiensis and P. managuense (since they regularly hit 14+ inches), and would also consider an exceptionally large trimac or midas cichlid. Any other species I should look into? Any idea who might have big specimens? (I am going to be getting in touch with some MFK vendors soon.)

Also I have a nice big budget for this project, so I've gone ahead and ditched the old power filters and ordered 3 fx5's for filtration. This should be sufficient right?

Thanks for the advice, and sry about the long post.

welcome. id say you have a couple good choices. i would deff throw a female festae in there. people who see them will probably want them for there pure beuty. heres mine as a reference if your not familier with them.

If you are only going to have 1 or 2 fish I would look at the following.

Male Umbee
Male Dovii
Giant gourami
Arowana
A mated pair of Oscars

They all get huge and your filtration will more then take care of there needs. I would stay away from N. haitiensis as they are really sensitive.

in a 150 i'd go with a dovi pair or maybe some king of FH. but a single fish gets kind of boring with that size i'd go sa/ca community

Yea, big male Dovi, Umbie, Jag or Trimac. How about Peacock Bass or two. White sand and some driftwood 10K lighting.............NICE!

the reason i think the female festae is your best choice is its superb color and the size. it only reaches 12 inches in the wild and most say 8-10 inches in captivity. so most of your customers could give this fish a home much eaiser then the above mentioned. most customers have 55 and 75 for there larger size tank. a 55 is doable but a 75 would be nice. all the other fish need 125 gallons all the way up to 220. id do a jag and festae in the 150.

wow, thanks for the replies. I had looked at Festaes...but I ruled them out since the females were the most intensely colored, but not really big enough to fill out a 150. And to those who said dovii or umbie, would males of those species really work in a 150? I assumed they would get WAY too big.

I can't really do a community tank because the previous oscar was well loved by all our clients and everyone wants a single fish as a replacement...I know its kind of a waste of potential with a 150g.

Also to clarify, I don't work at a lfs or something. I work at a law firm...this tank is in the lobby. So this is strictly a display tank for one monster cichlid.

I think a single male P. managuense would be the way to go for this project.

3 FX5's would probably be a little overkill, even though most people will tell you that you can't have too much filtration. I'd keep and use 2 on that sized tank, personally.
