I am buyng a 125 gallon tank and wanting information on filtration for it. Me and my wife are pretty sure we are going the african cichlid route and I am getting all kinds of mixed reviews on how to filter such a tank. I want to know from tank owners that have just canister filters running there tank with no problems. I want to get away from the hang ons and just have the cleaner look. As of now I have not purchased any filters but everyone wants me to run two emperor 400 and maybe a canister in the future for clarity??? I am new at this i repeat so please explain for me why people keep wanting me to run the hang ons and not run just a canister style? If it can be done please let me know what size and what brand. Thank you in advance. Chris Derrick

cichlids are very messy so the more you filter the water the better. i would say to use 2 Fluval 405 on a 125 they are rated at 100 gallons each. you could go with 2 fluval 305 but more filtration the better

Opinions are like ***holes. Everyone has one and no one else wants to hear it. Hrm, actually, you aparently want to hear opinions.

1) Sump (wet/dry). Cheap(er), big and easy to maintain. Can be DIY.
2) Canisters. Fluval, eheim or (insert chinese off brand here). The bigger the better. For the money, get a Fluval FX5 off ebay for cheap. If money is not an object, get an eheim 2260 or 2262 and be the envy of everyone.
3) HOBs. Easy to maintain. The two contenders in this realm are the AC110 and the Emperor 400. Both are great.

What will work best for you depends on HOW MANY and HOW BIG your fish are. Sumps work best, then canisters, then HOBs. Most people mix and match to get the best of both or all three worlds. There are other types of filters out there, but the above three are the most common and available.
