A number of web searches have given personal info that keeping a(or pair)of African lake Jewel cichlids can be done with a SA Green Terror and a Blue Acara cichlid.

Am not interesting breeding at this time.

Anyone here have any first hand knowledge of doing that with acceptable results, Please?

thanks

yes they can be kept together, there has been some debate on whether wild caught africans should be kept with Ca/Sa do to the very different water that they live in, afrcians have saltier and more acidic water for the most part. but you will be fine.

One thing you'll want to consider is the growth rate of these species. BEFORE buying them, I would make sure that the GT is bigger than the africans, or at least is the dominant fish. GT's are slow growers and could get picked on as Africans can tend to harass fish quite regularly. If your Africans have the upper hand from the start I doubt a GT would last long. I could see the Jewels harassing it until it dies from stress

I'd get the GT first and add the Africans a couple days to a week later. You're definitely gona want to read up on these fish before you buy. Sounds like a cool set-up. Good luck. Hope it works

P.S. Acara and GT's (Gold Saum) reportedly don't get along too well sometimes because they look very similar, and often see eachother as threats. Not sure a GT and a Blue acara would get along. May want to look into that as well

FYI, if you want to cut down on aggression don't get a pair of jewels, they have been known to be very aggresive cichlids when breeding, pound fior pound very tough guys. both of the aequidens species you mentioned are very passive for the most part, and for the most part grow to the 8-10" range, whereas as mentioned before, jewels grow around 5".

Thanks for your thoughts, guys!

Yes, I already have GT (presenty about 2 1/2" long. Has been in the tank for about a week now. (I'm setting up a 55g Cichlid tank....after finishing stocking another 55g tank of non-cichlid community fish in another room in my house).

The Jewel will be about 2 1/4"......and I plant to Not get a pair, because I know about the breeding couples extreme aggression to other fish.

I have heard that Blue Acaras and GTs will sometimes breed a hybred brood. But at this point have now idea what sex each will be when they mature.....not too interested in breeding until I learn a lot more. It's been so, so, so many years since I last had Cichlids.

thanks
