Hello my name is steve, i have a setup right now with a motoro stingray and a arowana. My girlfriend loooves discus, and ive always thought they were very pretty also. I have a 30g tank, i want to do something with this tank for discus. It will be of course a grow out tank. Probably near November they would be moved to a 150g wide tank with the ray and aro. Ive been told by many people these fish can get along. Whats ur opinion? and ive read through all of the stickys, but whats in every1s opinion the best setup i can do with this 30?? im not positive so im going to hold off until i hear some ideas from u guys. But today i was planning on going to the store and getting sand for the tank, live plants??, whats my best bet??

Hi Steve! :)

I have a tank (250 Gallons) With 2 motoro rays (6", 9") a Silver arowana (12") and 6 discus (4"-6") and I've never had a better tank than this one. The fish all get along nicely, even to the point where the arowana likes to hang out and swim with the discus.

The reason everyone has a different opinion on this is because it's ALL about the timing and the individual fish. I got the discus when they were probably 2"-3". The arowana was also only 6". The reason the get along is because they grew up together.

I recently put in a new discus (he was about 2" long) and the arowana immediately attacked it. Because I took the injured discus out of the 250 gal. and put him in the hospital tank, he's alive, but missing a few fins and covered with scars.

So, basically in my opinion, all of the fish go well together, but only if they are similar sized when they are all introduced.

Since they rays are such personal fish, it really depends on your ray. I got lucky and got the 2 sweetest rays in the world. They wouldn't hurt anything except blood worms. :)
Some rays can be very aggressive, and will go after discus. It's really up to you to judge your ray, but most motoros I've seen would be fine with discus, except this one large male i saw at an aquarium...

Sorry say so much, and sorry if it doesn't make a lot of sense, but to summarize it up, You stand a much greater chance of success if the arowana and ray are small. Get the largest discus you can. You know your fish better than anyone else, and each of these fish are different, so you're the only person who can really answer your question.

Good luck! :)

Oops, I forgot your other question.

You could probably grow out 3 or 4 small discus in the 30 gal, but I don't recommend it, as I have tried it with less than desirable results. There's a myth going around that small discus feel safest in small tanks. This is not true at all. The bigger, the better as with all other fish.

ok great thanks. right now my aro is about 7" and the motoro is a pup around 5" so maybe ill wait till november when i set the 150g grow out tank up to get the discuss and not even bother with a seperate tank. i say grow out becuz i do know the aro could prolly live in that but the ray wont. i already have a 300g ply tank in mind :)

what size tank are the ray and arrow in if its a big tank put the discus in with them seem small enough

Man you need to do some serious research if you believe a fish that can/should/will get above 30" in length can live in a 150g tank.

IME you would be better off raising the discus to there full potential first and then put them in with the arowana. I won't comment on the ray with discus as I have no experience in keeping the two together.

dude honestly bedrick shut up, just dont post on anything that has anything to do with me. if u like to comment on one thing and leave another out then dont comment at all. i have a 300g ply tank in mind. which will happen. i dont care for ur opnion anymore. the only reason y u get on this site is to bash people. no1 likes u. just becuz u r more experienced than others doesnt mean ur "the man"

LOL if you don't want my opinion they use the ignor button in your user control panel. Or just don't post nonsense about a 150g being big enough for a silver aro :screwy:

Bedrick I'm gunna say ur about 35 years old and definitly single, becuz it's obvious u have no life with a woman cuz alls u do is sit on here n bash on people. U prolly hate ur life. Or maybe daddy treated u poorly while still a child. Either way I don't care just don't post anything on my threads. I've left the aro section and don't even post in there anymore. So I leave u alone and u leave me alone
