I am new here and need some help. I recently bought 2 red forest jewel cichlids - i was hoping it was a male & a female, but it seems my luck is out. From all the pictures I have seen they are probably Hemichromis lifalili as they seem to be a brighter red than the bimaculatus. Still not sure though. The one is a bright red with two dark spots on each side, the other is a darker red ( brownish red ) with only one spot clearly visible. Both have very bright blue sparkles all over their bodies.
There have been eggs in the tank twice since I got them ( the first time only about 20 ) but the last time must have been about 200. The eggs where there for about 36 hours and then the bright red one ( I called this one Ruby and you guessed it , the darker one is called Red) ate all the eggs. Since then Ruby's stomach is very big and I don't know if they are mouthbrooders or not or why they are behaving the way they do. They normally spend time apart from each other in the tank ( one in each corner unless it is feeding time) - not like my convicts that is forever chasing each other around the tank or the kribensis that is dancing for each other when it is spawning time. I don't know much about jewel cichlids so I am learning as I am going along.
Oh yes, they are in a 130lt tank, temp around 24C, 2 hiding places and a few flat rocks and 2 plastic plants.
So if anybody can help with a bit of advice it would really be appreciated as I absolutely fell in love with my red "submarines" when I saw them the first time.
