Hi.
I have registered and been visiting this site for a couple of years now, guess it's time to say hi.
I rescued a 16" Pacu and 6" Jack Dempsey from a friend who had them in a 50 gallon tank with a small (20 gal?) Hang On Back filter that had a Scotch Brite for filter media.
Both fish had long, stringy stuff hanging from their bodies... looked like fake halloween spider webs.
I had a 100 gallon acrylic with stand in my garage. My mothers neighbor gave the tank/stand to her almost 15 years ago, after sitting in his backyard for a couple years. I took it from my mom and it sat in my garage for at least five years.
In March 2011, after seeing the condition my friend kept the fish in, I told him I'll setup my 100 and take the fish from him.
As a newbie, I did waste some money and time due to advise from employees at chain pet stores. Following outdated advise, I did cycle my tank with feeder goldfish (2 doz).
Initial setup was Fluval 405, AquaClear 70, 200W heater and a few MaxiJet 900's for circulation. Later adding a Sailfin Pleco and a TMC 600 Sand filter.
Today's setup is 100 gallon with the now 22" Pacu with the now 12" Sailfin Pleco, sad to say the Jack Dempsey died at 8" in Feb 2012, I beleive he was stressed out as the Pacu kept harrassing him.
Filtration on the 100 gallon has evolved to the AquaClear 70 and a Wet/Dry I built from 5 gallon buckets and a 22 gallon rubbermaid tote, with Seachem Matrix and Pond Matrix as media.
I addition, I have a 50 gallon utilizing the Fluval 405. Had to get this tank to sepearate the Jack Dempsey from the Pacu. Yes this is where the Jack eventually died.
Living in the 50 are the two surviving feeders, now 7"... a 5" Pleco and a 9" Pleco I rescued from the kid next door, who had the fish in a 10 gallon tank.
Now I've picked up a used 240, because the Pacu has outgrown the 100.
This is where you guys come into play. The 240 holds water, but I have a few issues that need to be addressed before I can rehome my fish. I will be leaning on you guys in these areas: Tank Stand build (2x4s), Acrylic tank modification and EuroBracing, Acrylic tank repair (well repair OF a repair) and further down the line Automation (has anyone done this yet?)
