I am very new to this hobby...(more like an addiction) I know now what I got myself into.

I work from home and about a month someone suggested I get an aquarium(Stress relief). I wanted the biggest aquarium I could fit on my desk next to my monitor. I ended up getting a 12 gallon aquarium.

I bought four fish that I liked...2 Pacus and 2 Oscars...with absolutely no knowledge about them and no advice from the staff. (and there were no little cards below the tanks letting me know their needs or anything)

Well I set up the tank put in the fish which were very small when I purchased them.

The Pacus were the size of a quarter and the Oscars were about 2 inches.

I did not know that I should have cycled the tank.

Within the first two days I realized my fish were really dirty so I was basically doing daily water changes since.

Well at about a week passed and my Pacus nearly doubled in size and were looking very healthy also my Oscars also got fat and colored real well.

So I decide to research more on my fish...:WHOA:

Boy was I shocked when I found out what I did. I felt sick to my stomach and felt so bad for my fish. I decided to really research the hobby and decided to buy a 120 gallon tank with the next month or so.

I changed the powerfilter that came with the tank for an AC 20 and put the old bio sponge in the basket too so there would be some BB. That made a huge difference.

So then I read all about water and tested my water about a week ago and my tank was cycled according to the API tests.

My fish seem healthy and are growing like they should from what I have read.

I realize the error of my ways and I hope I don't get flamed by you all for being so ignorant.

Now my question is this....

I really have gotten attached to my Pacus and I don't want to have to return them.

Do you all think the 120 gallon tank will be good for a while until I can make an outdoor pond for my Pacu? or setup a 300 gallon plus tank in my garage for them?

They are currently about 3.5 inches and the Oscars are not 3 inches yet.

Oh and as far as the 120, will 2 AC 110s and an Eheim 2213 be decent filtration for this guys at their current size?

A fluval 405 or bigger canister filter would be great filtration, and as for my opinion the pacus and oscars should have plenty of room in a 120 for awhile.

wow, well u gain alot of respect from me for doing that.
welcome to mfk.
i did the same thing when i started and as soon as i put just 2 of the 6 fish i bought in to the tank that the shop sold me and told me they would b fine for life in, i realised hhhmmm they need a bigger tank lol and got a 125 instead of the 30g they were in.

Thank you guys for the input. As for my choice in filters, the reason is that I can get all three for less than $240.

The Fluval 405 would run quite a bit more than the Eheim.

Houston, TX here. Welcome MFK'er. Never had a tank that size, but I would think thats enough water flow for good filtration at their current size but that would be a royal pain to replace all the different filter medias. There are some decent canisters out there for less than 240 bux. Maybe just get a big one started now, then add an AC110 when the fish get big. Keep your test kit handy & use it every day or two. Just be careful, as I know those fish get HUGE.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah when I found out how massive the Pacus get I kind of had an :nilly: kind of moment.

But hopefully if everything goes according to plan I can get them A nice pond in the back yard.

I know the Oscars will be fine in a 120.
