Hello. I am Aufwuchs. I would like to introduce myself. I am, as I have found, like many fish keepers: returning to the hobby after a few decades of hiatus. As a high school student I kept killifish, but had to stop when I went to college. After college, time, space and work prevented any return to fish keeping. A few years ago my then nine-year-old daughter expressed an interest in a tank of fish. She lost interest after a few months, but I was hooked.

I do not own any large fish, much less monsters. This is not because of disinterest. I continue to be plagued by a lack of space. I plan to move the fish into my greenhouse; but even there the largest tank will be a 20 gallon long. I have a few pairs of killifish from the Fundulopanchax
genus -- if disposiition and pointy teeth count toward "monster," then these species qualify.

Why would I join this site? The reason is straitforward: I believe that the problems we aquarists face differ only in scale, not in kind. I hope to learn and contribute much.

Welcome to the forum Aufwuchs!
Your fish sound very nice! I have not kept killifish, but I know that they are very beautiful fish!
I hope you enjoy your time here!

welcome to MFK..funny you should mention killifish as my husband just mentioned to me that he would like to set up another tank just for them... they are beautiful although they do not live a long life span.. but i think we will get them sometime this winter...and i know who to get info from when i need it..lol.. nice to meet you and enjoy mfk... and show some pics of those killifish when you can.

hello and welcome, :)

Thank you for your welcome Red Devil. I am unable to supply fish at this time as I am rebuilding my set-up. I will not have any available until late Spring. However may I recommend Fred Berhmann, Athens Aquatics, 37 West Bridge Street, Catskill, NY 12414. AthensAquatics@Juno.com. He is a producer of very fine killies at fair prices. Killies are also available from many fine sources at AquaBid.com.

As to life span, it depends on the genus and spawning habits. The mop spawners that life in relatively stable environments easily live three years. The annuals, or soil spawners, live in temporary pools and are genetically programed to have short life spans. This latter group of killies live at most 18 months, but generally not more than a year. There are also facultative mop or soil spawners and this group has a life span comparable to the mop spawners.
