Hi All,

I've been lurking on the forum for a while now and have picked up some good tips and info. I've been into fish keeping for years, but have only recently bought a house that has allowed me to fully get back into the hobby. My situation is that I've bought a new tank that I was hoping to get a pair of O's in. The dimensions are 48" Long, 15" wide and 22" tall, I don't think it's a "standard" size and cant find the gallonage for it anywhere - but I think it's somewhere between 50-70g (US).

I bought 6 baby O's hoping to get a pair form, but after about 4 weeks things started to get a bit rough and no sign of a pair (have since learned that it takes a few years for them to reach maturity - unlike other cichlids I keep/kept). So, I've had to make a tough decision and take 5 of my babies back, trouble is the lone O now sulks and hides behind the decor all the time. He's in there with 1 x L191 (Dull eyed Royal Plec). Sorry about the rambling post, but my questions are

1. Does anyone know what size my tank is?

2. Is it suitable long term for my O

3. Should I add anymore fish to try and make my O feel more secure?

ps. Currently filtered with an external eheim ecco canister.

thanks in advance for any info.

Looks like you picked up some wrong info. First of all, oscars grow to an average on 12-14". Figure out having that much fish in that size tank. Oscars also mature at one year of age, this leads me to my other answer which is the growth. From point of birth, oscars usually grow to 10" in thier first year of life.

A single O by itself needs an absolute minimum of 75 US gallons. A pair needs at LEAST 125 gallons. Your oscar is probably sulking a lot because he had lost his buddies. Dont worry, in a few months he'll be out and likely to be a very personable cichlid.

At the top of this forum, look to the right and you should see a 'coversion' button
click it and the rest is simple to figure out the gallonage. Just for the record, 48"x15"x22" = 68.7 Gallons.

so, in your opinion guys, will the O be ok in that tank with the small plec for company? Chances are that's the biggest tank I'm going to be able to get as floor space is really limited in the UK.

danios to the rescue, put a lil shoal in and the O's super happy with them, even plays kiss chase with them lol.

note to self, Danio = expensive food.

eventually, yes lol. you tank sounds like it'll be okay for a single O. i realize you already bought him, but red devils make better single fish because of their agression, but its all about your personal preferrance.
