Hello, Iv had a 12" Florida gar now for about 6 months now. Living oh so peacfully with my 3, 6-9" Oscars. and i Love him to death.. he was the last fish i got and he quickly became my favorite. I just got a good deal on a 125g tank, and iv decided to fill it with all Gar's Which leads me to my first question.

Is it a good idea to have more then one type of GAR in the same tank?
And how many Gars would be ideal for a 125g tank?

I was thinking 2 Spotted, 2 Longnose, 1 yellow/gold.
I was thinking Maybe a Corcodile gar too, but iv not researched them at all. not sure if they are extremely agressive

From what iv hear the alligator gar is Very Very agressive. And they grow like wildfire. So i think that pretty much rules them out for my new tank :(
And i wanted them most of all.

And also, the most important question. Does anybody know of any Online fish retailers who sell Gars? All i have been able to find are needlenose gar. and im not really interested in them..

Thanks Alot for your time, and Any replies :)

good luck looking for your gold and crocodile gars!!:grinno:

dimentions of yr 125g? i'm guessing it's a 4' by 2'? in this case you could house numerous(maybe 4-5?) gars except alligators due to their size and other reasons for a couple of years. thou the longnose will hit abt 18" in the first yr so it might not be such a good idea to get the longnose.

as for the online thingie, i only know where you can order tropical gars, which shocking is not in your to-get-list!!

Yes you got the tank dimentions right. Tyvm for your reply xander, i did not know that the longnose grew that fast. Perhaps i should get the tropical's insted? im going to go do so research on them :)

to begin...that tank footprint is not suitable for the no. of gar and the species you want. however it would make a fine growout tank for a little while...maybe 2 years...depending on species.

mixing species in most cases is acceptable and they will usually live peacefully together. you have already covered the alligator gar...not a logical choice to say the least.

crocodile and gold gar...you may be able to find a Xanthic (gold gar) if you are willing to drop the cash on it. as for the croc you might as well forget about it. as far as i know there is only one in existance.

i would say your best choice would be to do 2 or 3 florida/spotted gar. they are the most available, inexpensive, and are very harty in the home aquaria.

Skylar, is that you?

Ahhh IC i did not know the corcidile gar was one of a kind. i just seen a pic of it on primitivefish.com and i thought it looked cool. There was no info with the pic.

So you think 3 Gar would be ideal for my tank?

If so i was thinking 1 Spotted, 1 Tropical, and 1 Longnose.

I really like the longnose. I dont mind the fact that they Grow fast. Im sure by the time he outgrows the tank i will have created a strong enough brond with him. To go out and spring for a larger tank (Which i really plan on doing some day anyhow)

Also, Ewurm if your asking if im Skylar, The answer is nope :)

loads of people say this, but sometimes it never gets done. but just according to E_americanus, a 6' by3' should be able to hold a longnose for a pretty long time, if not for life. as fpr the tropical, it'll be expensive as well. but i agree with demjor19, start with spotted/floridas, then work your way up.

in the US the availability of spotteds are very limited. i'm not even sure if they are available at the moment. i too love the longnose...i am currently working on growing out a 6-7 inch specimen. just dont get these and not be able to provide a larger home in the future. be absolutely sure you can upgrade when it needs done.
