Hi there,my names aidy im 21 years of age .im a newbie ;) and wanting to start up my own fish tank, i was just browsing the internet, and saw this forum, ive just started to set up my fish tank, ive got a 30 gallon aquaruim, filter, lighting, heater, its all set up, ive got a sand gravel base, with false plants in there, its been running for about 3-4 days, im realy intrested in pirahnas, but im just wondering if any of you could give me some great tips, and help about them, and tips on the tank, to keep it maintained and safe for the fish, thanks for you help and time :)

welcome bro, well water quality is a priority here on the forum so you should always make sure that you have a superb filtration and frequent water changes coz P's are messy eaters, and if you could make your tank a little bigger i think it would be better so that schooling P's would thrive.

thanks for the reply bro, yeh im only purchasing a baby pirahna, but in a few months im gonna be purchasing a much bigger tank, could you please tell me how i can keep the water clean, and how to change the water? thanks matey

Well, I do about a 50% water change weekly, and the water stays very clean. Most people use a gravel hose to change out the water. The Python No-Spill is a great product that comes with a 20 foot hose, which you can extend if needed. The water just gets sucked out of the tank, into the hose, and down the drain. Then you switch it so sink water goes into the tank. Keep in mind that you will have to treat the water if it's not safe for fish.

Also, remember that you need to wait a month before adding fish to the aquarium, as the beneficial bacteria needs to build up.

welcome to the forum. You have found a great place to start to learn. I would take is slow and steady to you are happy. If you are looking into keeping P's I heard they are a good schooling fish so if you want more then 1 think about buying a couple and get the new tank soon. You will find that fish grow fast at a young age.

with messy fish like piranhas i would say water changes weekly for sure maybe even every 3-4 days

before you get any fish... is your tank cycled?

You should invest in a Test kit, some Seachem Prime and a siphon of some sort. Once your tank in fully cycled(check Setup and Filtration section for cycling references) I would recommend going with Exodons you could get away with a nice school in that size tank.

thanks for all your replys, and yes my uncle has done the test kit things for me, somthing like an amonia one, and some more, haha, i realy cannot wait to get hold of my pirahna. :)
