Hi everyone,

My name is Nick, from the Netherlands and I have had fish tanks for six years by now.
For most of this time I had (dwarf) cichlids in a 40 gallon tank.

But now, as the last of them has died, I think it might be time for something new.
As I have always liked arowanas and coelacanths (realise those are out of the question in my situation) i thought of perhaps starting an ancient tank.
Since I am new to these types of fish I came here to gather some information.

I was thinking of keeping my current tank. So 40 gallons available.

What could you recommend for this?

Cheers!

im dutch too, but will speak in english for ease.
40 gallons is good for butterfly fish, mormyrids, and thats about it;)

im supposing you want to keep ancients? better go with a bigger tank.

polypterus species can be kept in tanks above 55 gallon, and arowana's need tanks in the 400 gallons range, as they grow very big.

however, butterfly's and mormyrids are bove very unusual and beautiful, so look them up!
both need some experienced keeping though.

Leopard ctenopoma would fit in there just fine! Its a fish eater, a type of "climbing perch" from Africa

Pike Live bearers would fit great in there too.

If your looking for something intense red wolf fish are a great starter characin, just make sure your prepared to be bitten in handling and prep your tank for a wild jumper!

They only get about 8 in. So a 40 would be great for a single specimen I would imagine
