I just found this site, and thought I'd start by introducing myself. I haven't kept any fish for a few years, but my property recently flooded and I just rescued a baby trout or bass, at least by my guess but I could be wrong, from my black lab. I'm not sure WHAT it is but Maybe you guys can help. I'd like to try to keep him if I can. From what I can tell his slime is still good and intact, the dog was mainly barking at the little guy who was flopping around on my deck now that the water level has dropped. I've got him in a bowl of the same water that I'm assuming he was swimming in. I'm going to try and figure this site out a little bit and try to get a good picture taken so maybe yall could help with identification as well. He's swimming around and going up to the surface for air, but seems like he's recovering from the stress. We've got different kinds of brackish, fresh and salt water fish, though I think this guy is fresh water...MAYBE brackish because that's whats around my property. It's about maybe 2 inches long, though I haven't actually pulled out my measuring tape. Any advice?

Looks like a trout to me, not a bass. Rainbow? In any case it's freshwater.

Trout usually get too big for aquaria, and you'll need a chiller to keep it happy. Unless you're intending on setting up a big native tank, I'd release him.

I can't see clear enough to ID. I would encourage you to change its water several times a day and try again to get a picture in focus.

My best guess is a cyprinid minnow.

Well I finally got it to eat some small crickets I found trying to get away from the rest of the flood water, so I guess the little guy eating is a good sign

thanks, I'm going to try to track down some sort of large tank for him. I used to have an 80 gal but I sold it about 2 years ago. I think it's ok for right now considering he's been with me in the house for about an hour now, but I will do water changes to keep him oxygenated, and I'll go catch some more little crickets so it has food. If it's a trout then it's most likely speckled or gray, that's what's in the water around my house anyway.

Looks more like a rainbow trout to me, since both speckled trout and sea trout don't have that red coloring to them that your little guy does.

well I suppose anything is possible with a flood like we just had lol I know there are a few freshwater bodies kind of close to me. If I can't find a good set up for him soon, I might just release him into a friend's lake (man made). She's got a bunch of bass in there so I'm leery about putting him in there right now while he's so small. But I suppose it's my best option if I can't get him a proper set up

Oh, this story reminds me of my wife catching 10 tiny carp and wanting to take them home...and we did.
2,5 Years later and currently running over a 1000 Liters of tanks I can say that "rescue" operation turned out fine, hope yours does have a happy ending too!
Mind you all the carp passed the 10" mark very quickly and are Pond fish nowadays.
