First off I figured I would say hi. I am a novice at aquariums but beginner with cichlids. My wife and I currently have a 55g aquarium that we want to set up as a cichlid tank. We plan on making an background out of styrofoam and one of my co workers just made one and it looks nice. We want to use sand and have a nice grade already picked out. So I am looking for what type of filteration I should use for this. We tried setting up one awhile ago with the back hanging filters and the sand was to fine and wreaked havoc upon them. So we went with a more course sand but I am still hesitant on using the back hanging filters again. Any help on this matter would be much appreciated. and thanks in advance.

Wet/Dry for sure.

I'd say wet/dry as well

fluval or eheim for sure
renas are decent, wont really make a difference as long as you have enough filtration make sure you have at least a 4 times turn over rate on most of my tanks i have a 8-10 time gph turnover haha

For a novice, I would say go with a canister filter. They are very easy to manage and use.

Sumps & Wet/Dry filters are great too. I just don't know if it would be worth it to put one on a 55G tank. IMO

I have a Rena XP3 on my 70G with pool filter sand and it works great. They key to using Hang on back filters and cannister filters with sand is to make sure the intake is at leats 4-5 inches from the top of the sand.

As far as the amount of filtration, the boxes are never right wither. Rena XP3s are for 175G tanks. I wouldn't try and put it on anything bigger than a 75.
